A barcarolle is a musical form which describes a song or instrumental piece in a swaying 6/8 time, sugessting the lilting motion of a Venetian gondola. Shcherbakov's Barcarolle for Piano and Orchestra is less a literal interpretation of the traditional form, but rather a spiritual one which suggests floating along a winding canal which is at times serene and darkly ominous at others. The premiere was conducted by Volodymyr Sheiko with Maria Vichliaeva on piano.
