In 1950, Pearl founder Katsumi Yanagisawa noticed a shortage of drums in Japan’s education system. He directed his small music stand company to begin making percussion instruments. Pearl’s “President” drum set hit it big with the rock crowd in the late 1960's. Concert and marching bands followed close behind. The presence of the Pearl logo on so many stages in the late 1980’s and 90’s propelled the brand to international dominance. Today the family-owned company is the largest manufacturer of percussive instruments in the world.
Innovations like the Championship FFX free-floating marching snare drum, the MLX Maple shell, the cajon, drum pedals and handhelds have always attracted great drummers of the day, and that continues today. Both Blake Shelton and Rihanna jam with Pearl endorsing drummers every night. The Pearl logo peppers stages and football fields everywhere.
Percussion is all about options and creativity. A band that can feature Pearl snare drums made of aluminum, mahogany, maple, steel, birch and stainless is prepared for most sheet music and beyond. Pearl achieves the very complex in products like the fiberglass Championship marching drum carrier vest and the very simple with stylish wood-crafted cajons or hand drums.
