In 1950, Pearl founder Katsumi Yanagisawa noticed a shortage of drums in Japan’s education system. He directed his small music stand company to begin making percussion instruments. Pearl’s “President” drum set hit it big with the rock crowd in the late 1960's. Concert and marching bands followed close behind. The presence of the Pearl logo on so many stages in the late 1980’s and 90’s propelled the brand to international dominance. Today the family-owned company is the largest manufacturer of percussive instruments in the world.
