Woodwinds

Woodwind refers to a group of instruments in which sound is produced by the vibration of a reed (such as with the clarinet, oboe or saxophone) or by the passing of air across a tone hole (such as with the flute).

Brass

Brass instruments are classified by the way they produce sound—through the vibration of the player’s lips. While the valves, slides and keys on brass instruments are used to change their overall length and therefore the pitch, fine adjustment of harmonics comes from the player’s control over airflow and lip shape, known as the embouchure. Brasswinds include trumpet, cornet, French horn, trombone, euphonium and more.

Orchestral Strings

Stringed instruments are played by plucking, striking or bowing taut strings. The stringed instruments in an orchestra include the violin, viola, cello and double bass. All are generally played with a bow, although they may also be plucked with one’s finger to create a short, plunky sound.

Percussion

Played by striking, scraping or rubbing with a stick, mallet or the player’s hands, percussion instruments have developed over thousands of years, evolving from the most rudimentary forms into complex, specialized musical tools.
