Best of the past and present.
The starting point for the Yamaha YTR-9445NYS trumpet development process was to clearly outline the design and performance objectives of this Custom Artist trumpet. Both the development artist Robert Sullivan and Yamaha custom shop manager Bob Malone felt that this Custom Artist Model trumpet would need to have a sound based on the best vintage instruments currently in use by players in top American orchestras. In addition the performance characteristics specifically would need to be compatible with the New York Philharmonic sound as well as The Cleveland Orchestra. Since the project originated while Sullivan was a member of the New York Philharmonic, and his subsequent move to the Cleveland Orchestra, this blend with both orchestral brass sections was extremely important.
The design centered around a traditional C trumpet configuration using a standard mouthpipe (non-reversed style) with a short taper.
Yamaha YTR-9445NYS Performance Objectives
The initial development began in 2002, around the same time as the YTR-9335NYS. Because of this concurrent process, both the NY Bb and C instruments share some unique features such as the same mouthpipe taper and narrow brace sets. Orchestral players looking for a C trumpet that will allow them to blend within their existing brass section will find the Yamaha trumpet to be an excellent choice. When combined with the superior intonation, flexible response and an even sound, the YTR-9445NYS will be the choice of orchestral musicians for many years to come.
Variable wall thickness bell
The combination of the variable bell thickness on this Yamaha trumpet combined with a unique side-seam design helps the player produce a full, rich sound. Variable wall thickness simply means that the bell material gets thinner as it flares out towards the bell rim.
MC2NY mouthpipe
Wider slotting provides quick response and excellent intonation.
French bell bead rim with low dome wire
A low-profile French bead bell rim improves overall projection due to the refined, sharper bell rim edge.
Skeletonized valve stem
The valve stems have been designed to allow for increased flexibility in instrument response and timbre.
Engraved Artist Model logo
The bell engraving was achieved using a minimally invasive method. This technique has little effect on the overall temper of the bell material.
Narrow brace set
Reminiscent of designs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, a narrower brace helps give the trumpet a quicker response and transmit vibrations efficiently.
High water key chimney
The larger gap created by an extended water key chimney improves resistance characteristics and overall tone.
